List of Volunteer Opportunities

To help you best prepare for filling out the volunteer application, this is a list of possible job duties. Please have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice. Positions fill up quickly.

Double Digits Club Program Help  Mondays 2:00-4:30 p.m. June 19 – August 7 Double Digits Club volunteers will work directly with staff to execute programs for ages 10-13. Volunteers will set up and clean up chairs, tables, and supplies and will supervise students while independently leading group activities. Activities may include games, crafts, science experiments, and more. Willingness to help and work with students is a must.

Discover Fun Storytime  Tuesdays 2:00-4:15 p.m. June 20 – August 8
(Storytelling training workshop for Discover Fun volunteers will be held Monday, June 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.) 
Volunteers will assist library staff with set up and clean up for this weekly storytime designed for children ages 7-10. Volunteers will perform puppet shows, finger plays, songs, and stories in front of a large audience. Enthusiastic participation and being comfortable performing in front of a large audience is mandatory. Please arrive 30 minutes early the first week (June 20) for additional training. Volunteers may be asked to demonstrate their enthusiasm and comfort level prior to assignment. (Please note, there will be no volunteering on Tuesday, July 4.)

Pajama-Rama & Storytime Skills  Tuesdays 6:15-7:45 p.m. June 20 – August 8
(Storytelling training workshop for Pajama-Rama volunteers will be held Monday, June 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.) Volunteers will assist library staff with set up and clean up for an evening storytime designed for the whole family. Enthusiastic participation and being comfortable performing in front of a large audience is mandatory. Volunteers will learn theatrics and puppetry, practice and present stories, skits, and songs. (Please note, there will be no volunteering on Tuesday, July 4.)

Wild & Wacky Storytime  Wednesdays 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 21 – August 9
(Storytelling training workshop for Wild & Wacky volunteers will be held Monday, June 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.) Volunteers will assist library staff with set up and clean up for this weekly storytime designed for children ages 3-6 and their families. Volunteers will perform puppet shows, finger plays, songs, and stories in front of a large audience. Enthusiastic participation and being comfortable performing in front of a large audience is mandatory. Please arrive 30 minutes early the first week (June 21) for additional training. Volunteers may be asked to demonstrate their enthusiasm and comfort level prior to assignment.

Thursday Special Performance/Collection Help  Thursdays 11:45 a.m.-2:00 p.m. June 22 – August 10 – The first four weeks of summer (June 22-July 13) volunteers set up chairs, tables, and supplies in the community room. Volunteers will supervise children before, during, and immediately after the performances. Willingness to help and work with children is a must. The final four weeks of summer (July 20-August 10) volunteers will assist with various assignments to maintain the library collection including dusting and straightening the library shelves, cleaning books, and other tasks as assigned.

Thursday Special Performance  Thursdays 2:00-4:00 p.m. June 22 – August 10  Volunteers set up chairs, tables, and supplies in the community room. Volunteers will supervise children before, during, and immediately after the performances. Willingness to help and work with children is a must.

Thursday Special Performance  Thursdays 5:45-7:45 p.m. June 22 – August 10  Volunteers set up chairs, tables, and supplies in the community room. Volunteers will supervise children before, during, and immediately after the performances. Volunteers put away tables, chairs, and supplies after the performance. Willingness to help and work with children is a must.

Saturday Family Storytime  Saturdays 9:00-11:30 a.m. June 24 – August 12 (Storytelling training workshop for Saturday Family Storytime volunteers will be held Monday, June 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.) 
Volunteers will assist library staff with set up and clean up for this weekly storytime designed for the whole family. Volunteers will perform puppet shows, finger plays, songs, and stories in front of a large audience. Enthusiastic participation and being comfortable performing in front of a large audience is mandatory. Volunteers may be asked to demonstrate their enthusiasm and comfort level prior to assignment.   

Shelving – Volunteers will sort and shelve children’s books in alphabetical order. Other duties include cleaning books and straightening the Children’s Services area. Volunteers must be able to file alphabetically and numerically, and have a keen eye for detail. Volunteers need to have the ability to stay on task and work independently. Two-hour shifts are available throughout the week.

Collection Help – Volunteers will assist with various assignments to maintain the library collection. A minimum of one hour of each shift will be dedicated to straightening the library shelves making sure the books are straight and organized. Additional duties will include dusting library shelves, cleaning books, and other tasks as assigned. Volunteers need to have the ability to stay on task and work independently. This is a weekly two- hour evening shift and shifts are limited in availability.

Prize Booth – Volunteers will award Summer Reading prizes to children. Volunteers must have basic computer skills and the ability to communicate effectively with kids and adults. Volunteers will know the correct prizes to hand out at each prize level and must be enthusiastic as well as attentive to details. Two-hour shifts are available throughout the week. 

Prize Booth Substitute Only – This on-call Prize Booth volunteer position allows the flexibility for volunteers who cannot commit to a weekly volunteer shift. Prize Booth Substitutes will be invited to fill prize booth vacancies throughout the summer. Volunteers will award Summer Reading prizes to children. Volunteers must have basic computer skills and the ability to communicate effectively with kids and adults.  Volunteers will know the correct prizes to hand out at each prize level and must be enthusiastic as well as attentive to details.  This is an on-call 2-hour shift.

Mark your calendar to apply starting May 8 for Yorba Linda residents and May 15 for non-Yorba Linda residents. Remember to have your valid library card in your name.
