3D printing is a process by which solid 3 dimensional objects are created from a programmed digital model. Users can design an object on the computer, or choose from a predesigned file, and the printer builds the design into a solid piece or pieces using a plastic filament.

Each print job may not exceed 4 hours in total duration to complete. The Library will only accept 2 print jobs per person every 14 days. If there is high demand, the Library may further limit the number of jobs per person.

1) The Library currently owns an AIO Zeus All-In-One 3D Printer. The 3D printer has a maximum build volume of approximately 8.0 x 6.0 x 5.7 inches. Layer Resolution Settings are High (80 microns; or 0.0031 in), Standard (120 microns; 0.0047 in.), and Low (200 microns; 0.0078 in.). The Zeus software is used to render 3D models into files compatible with our specific model 3D printer. The printers melt PLA Plastic at 197°C and pass it through the extruder to render it into physical objects via a process called fused filament fabrication.
2) All 3D printing will be performed by a Yorba Linda Public Library staff member. Patrons may not operate the 3D printer but are welcome to observe the 3D printer in action.
3) The 3D printer is intended for use by patrons that have an active Yorba Linda Public Library card.
4) A nominal fee will be charged for the production and materials to print 3D objects.
- $1.00 fee will be charged for setting a print job
- $0.10 fee will be charged for each 1 gram of plastic used (rounded up to the next whole gram) including a raft and any supports if required or requested.
- At the staff’s discretion, the setup fee may be waived when additional copies of the same item are requested within a 90 day period of the original print.

6) The Library reserves the right to refuse to print any object at staff’s discretion.
7) The Library’s 3D printer may be used only for lawful purposes. Patrons will not be permitted to use the Library’s 3D printers to create materials that are:
- Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
- Likely to fail or print incorrectly or likely to cause damage to the 3D printer.
- In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the printers will not be used to produce objects which violate copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
- Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment.
1) Object Design
- Any 3D drafting software may be used to create a design as long as the file can be saved in .stl file format.
- Creating a new design requires an advanced knowledge of 3D modeling software products. Video tutorials that accompany Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) programs can be of assistance. Library staff cannot be of assistance in new design creation.
- Designated computers located inside the library have the 3D modeling software such as Blender available for object design purposes. Again, these programs require advanced knowledge to utilize and Library staff cannot assist patrons in their use.
- Many designs are available online from file-sharing sites like thingiverse.com, free of charge. Others are available for sale from various sites.
- The Library maintains a small collection of objects which are available to print. For a list of predesigned objects, please contact the library.
2) Submitting a Design
Patrons can submit their 3D printer project by filling out the form listed under the Form tab. Prints may take up to ten (10) business days to print, depending on staff availability, number of print jobs pending with the library, etc.
3) Final Approval
- After a design is submitted, staff will review the item to be printed for adherence to the 3D Printing Rules and Procedures and to evaluate the printing cost.
- The patron will be contacted via email, once their design has been approved or rejected for printing.
- Staff will inform the patron of the cost and print time of the project. The patron will approve or decline the printing of the job. If the patron chooses to move forward with printing, the patron will be responsible for the cost of the project.
4) Upon Completion of Print Job
- The patron will be contacted upon the completion of the print job. Items must be picked up by the individual who submitted the original request.
- Once contacted, the patron will have 14 days to pick up and pay for their item. If the item is not picked up within this time period, the item becomes the property of the Library and may be kept, discarded or otherwise used at staff discretion.
